Dear Athena Supporter,
For fourteen years I’ve written this thank you letter following another successful fundraising event due to the kindness and generosity of our many friends of Athena. Today I write to say thank you but with a heavier heart given the precarious future of not only our citizens, but also of our businesses. I am so grateful that we were all able to gather in person as a community at our Casino Night at Athena on March 7th before we had to endure the social distancing we are experiencing now. I am encouraging all of us to think of it not as “social distancing”, but rather as “physical distancing with social solidarity”.
We are living in a different world. It is not business as usual. As a small business owner, I stand in solidarity with all the individuals and small business owners who generously contributed time, items, services, materials, resources, and funds to our auction in support of our school. I am asking our community now to do what we can to support those of you who supported us. Please see the list of those individuals and businesses included with this letter and please buy take-out or gift cards from them where possible.
Casino Night raised funds for a DEI initiative essential to our work as humans and global citizens: To cultivate a truly diverse, equitable, and inclusive community for all people. This situation calls our DEI work into action. It calls us to recognize the unique nature of all of our circumstances, and to acknowledge we are all experiencing this pandemic together. We have an opportunity to make the world a better place through connection, innovation, and togetherness as one people, not divided by our differences. We must welcome different perspectives and have different priorities to pivot and creatively navigate these unprecedented times. We now treasure the things that we took for granted only weeks ago, allowing us to have more gratitude for how fortunate most of us truly are. We have the power to choose to adopt a positive outlook in the midst of this crisis, and think of it as a reset button that helps level the playing field and bring us closer to our families, neighbors, and community members, as fellow humans.
Thanks to our supporters, our fundraising efforts brought in $24,000. When we are able to physically gather again, we will reinstate all of our in-person professional development with our DEI coaches and reschedule the DEI events that had been scheduled. We hope that you will join us. Thank you for being part of this very special community. Nothing will bring us more joy than when we see all our students, staff, and families return to campus and grant us the privilege to continue to be a healthy and courageous place to grow, play, and actualize an equitable community.
